The Frieze of the Archers adorned the famous palace built by order of Darius I (522-486 BC) in Susa. Many fragments of the friezes that decorated the royal residence, dating from the 5th century BC, are preserved in the Musée du Louvre. Some of them, executed in enamelled reliefs on bricks, show animals in procession, some real and some fantastical, no doubt inspired by the famous Isthar Gate of Babylon.
