Cretan relief “Flying by your side“. This relief is made from a fragment of the so-called “Spring Fresco” found in the Minoan site of Akrotiri, in Thera, present-day Santorini (Greece), and dates back to 1600-1500 BCE. It is currently housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

The Akrotiri site, located on the Greek island of Santorini, is notable for the exceptional state of preservation of its buildings and the murals adorning the interior of the homes, as they were buried by the volcanic eruption that struck the island in the 17th century BCE. The frescoes that have survived to this day are a good reflection of Minoan or Cretan art; these paintings, characterized by their vivid colors, depict scenes of everyday life and natural motifs, plants, and animals, such as this fragment showing two birds flying among flowers.

The Minoan civilization flourished on Santorini in the second millennium BCE. Around 1627 BCE, the island experienced a devastating volcanic eruption that submerged part of it and caused a tsunami that affected the eastern Mediterranean coast, potentially triggering the collapse of the Cretan civilization.

The Minoan or Cretan civilization expanded from the island of Crete to the surrounding coasts, reaching its peak from 2100 to 1450 BCE. It is particularly known for its advanced architecture, exemplified by the Palace of Knossos, and its paintings, such as the famous bull-leaping fresco from Knossos or the murals of Akrotiri.
