Polychrome bas-relief inspired by the Renaissance painter Paolo Uccello’s work, “The Battle of San Romano” (Niccolò da Tolentino leading the Florentines).

The painting upon which this relief is based, “The Battle or The Defeat of San Romano” (in Italian, Battaglia di San Romano), is a triptych or set of three paintings originally made for the Medici Palace in Florence. It is painted using the egg tempera technique on panel and is currently dispersed in three museums. The original painting reproduced in this relief is from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

Paolo Uccello (1397-1475), fascinated by the problem of perspective in pictorial art, studied it passionately in books, then transferring it to his frescoes and paintings with such geometric rigor that he recreated completely unreal environments. The broken lances in the work refer to the problem of three-dimensionality, articulating a network of visual perspective lines.
