The Neoclassical sculpture reproduced here is the Greek Goddess Athena (Minerva for the Romans). Athena is the patron saint of the city of Athens, goddess of wisdom and war, daughter of Zeus, from whose head she was born as an adult and armed. She is depicted wearing a helmet, breastplate or aegis with the Gorgon’s head, spear and shield. Her attributes are the olive tree and the owl.
