Alexander the Great (336-323 BC) was the king of Macedonia from 336 BC until his death in 323 BC. He was the son and successor of Philip II of Macedon and Olympias of Epirus. Philip had prepared him to reign, providing him with military experience and entrusting Aristotle with his intellectual training. Alexander spent the early years of his reign imposing his authority over the subject peoples of Macedonia, who had taken advantage of Philip’s death to revolt. In the thirty-two years of his life, his empire stretched from Greece to the Indus Valley in the east and to Egypt in the south, where he founded the city of Alexandria. The culture of the Hellenistic empire stood out for seeking the unity of peoples beyond their religion and cultural differences in order to aspire to develop the best of the human being.
