Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44 BC) is surely the most famous figure in the history of Rome. A brilliant politician, writer, and statesman, he was also a military genius whose rule laid the foundations for the beginning of the Empire.
The prestige of Julius Caesar as a military leader won him support after his victory in the Gallic War, with which he significantly expanded Rome’s conquered territories. His political enemies conspired to strip him of his offices and military command, pushing him to challenge Pompey and his allies. With the crossing of the Rubicon River in 49 BC, the civil war against Pompey began, eventually leading to his victory and appointment as dictator for life. Caesar’s innovative reforms and growing power aroused distrust among some senators, who, led by Brutus, assassinated him on the Ides of March (the 15th) in 44 BC. His legacy still endures in military history, politics, and literature.
