Charles Robert Darwin (1809 – 1882) was an English naturalist and geologist, notable in the history of science for his contribution to the theory of evolution. In his work “On the Origin of Species,” he established the theory that all species of living beings have descended over time from common ancestors. In parallel with the investigations of the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, Darwin presented his scientific theory that the branching pattern of the evolution of all living beings resulted from a process he called natural selection. In this process, the struggle for existence has an effect similar to artificial selection in selective breeding, enhancing adaptations that favor the survival and reproduction of the individual.
