Recreation of a bust of Epictetus, made based on ancient engravings.

Epictetus (55 AD – 135 AD) was a Greek philosopher of the Stoic school. He lived part of his life as a slave of Epaphroditus, Nero’s freedman secretary. It is not known when he was manumitted. He was sent into exile along with other philosophers living in Rome by the emperor Domitian. In the Greek city of Nicopolis Epictetus founded a school where he taught the principles of Stoic philosophy: to know one’s own nature and to practise virtue by being guided by reason and good feelings, accepting whatever fate has in store for us.

“There is only one way to achieve happiness and that is to stop worrying about things that are beyond one’s power or will.”

“Live not by your own rules, but in harmony with nature.”

“No person is free unless they are master of themselves.”
