Recreation of a bust of the philosopher Epicurus, (341 B.C.,1- 271/270 B.C.) made from original sculptures from the 2nd century A.D. exhibited in the MET in New York and the British Museum in London.

Epicurus was a Greek philosopher born on Samos, who founded his own school of philosophy in Athens, “The Garden”, where he admitted women and slaves as disciples.

His teachings focused on the search for happiness through pleasure, pursuing tranquillity or the absence of disturbance in the soul (ataraxia). He understood pleasure as the pleasure proper to human beings, and placed the pleasures of the spirit above those of the body, without shunning them, but trying to find the right middle ground and avoiding falling into extremes, either in the excess of debauchery or the defect of total renunciation.
