Marcus Ulpius Trajan (53 – 117), born in Italica (Santiponce, Seville), was the second emperor of the Antonine dynasty, succeeding Nerva, who had ruled after the assassination of Domitian. His rule was characterised by successful military campaigns that helped the empire to expand further and an active reformist policy aimed at improving the living conditions of his citizens. He appointed Hadrian as his successor.
