Description
Winged horses of Tarquinia, exhibited in the National Museum of Tarquinia.
Measurements: Height: 23 cm. Width: 21 cm.
Approx. weight: 1,5 kg.
The high relief of the “Winged Horses of Tarquinia” is a fragment of the column that supported the pediment of the most important temple of the ancient Etruscan city of Tarquinia, the Temple of the Ara de la Reina, better known as the Templo Mayor de Tarquinia. Its realization dates back to the middle of the 4th century BC, although some researchers maintain that they could be more recent because it was only from the 3rd century that the Etruscan builders gave the temples a particular change in the decoration of the friezes and pediments.
