Marcus Aurelius (121 AD – 180 AD) ruled as co-emperor alongside Lucius Verus from 161 to 180 AD. He was also one of the most notable representatives of the Stoic school. In his best-known work, Meditations, he reflected his thought, focused on the constant pursuit of virtue and wisdom and their application in daily life.

The phrase reproduced here is a good example of the teachings of Marcus Aurelius and Stoic philosophy. According to this, we must distinguish between what is under our control and depends on us—such as our mind, thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes—and what does not depend on us and cannot be changed, such as external circumstances and events, thus encouraging the cultivation of inner strength to face and overcome difficulties.
