Reproduction of a Romanesque chest with a scene of the Holy Innocents. King Herod can be seen seated on the throne and ordering the soldiers to murder the children before the supplications and cries of their mothers.

Romanesque art developed in Europe between the 11th and 12th centuries, with an eminently religious character. Romanesque sculpture was often inserted into architecture, forming part of the façades and tympanums of churches and in capitals. It had a didactic function, showing scenes from the Bible through sculpted images in order to bring it closer to the people, most of whom were illiterate. The Romanesque style is characterised by its hieratism and rigidity, far removed from naturalism and realism, the faces are inexpressive, without reflecting emotions.
