The Roman goddess Ceres, Demeter for the Greeks, was the goddess of agriculture, she taught mankind how to cultivate the land. Her daughter Persephone was abducted by the god Hades and taken to his kingdom in the underworld, returning to the surface every spring. Ceres is often depicted with ears of grain and the Horn of Plenty.
