The sculpture we reproduce is the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus.
Octavian Augustus (63 BC – 14 AD) was the first Roman emperor. The imperial institution succeeded the triumvirate which Octavian had formed with Mark Antony and Lepidus and which came to an end after the defeat of Mark Antony at the Battle of Accius (31 BC).
During Augustus’ rule and in successive years the countries of the Mediterranean experienced relative peace, a period known as the Pax Romana or Pax Augusta.
