Marcus Aurelius (121 AD – 180 AD) was a Stoic philosopher and one of the so-called “Five Good Emperors.” He ruled as co-emperor alongside Lucius Verus from 161 to 180 AD. He was also one of the most notable representatives of the Stoic school. His best-known work, Meditations, written during military campaigns as a journal, reflects his thought, focused on the constant pursuit of virtue and wisdom and their application in daily life.

The phrase we reproduce is a good example of the teachings of Marcus Aurelius, following the principles of Stoic philosophy. According to it, we must distinguish between what is under our control, such as our mind—our thoughts, behaviors, attitudes, etc.—and what we cannot change, such as external circumstances and events, encouraging the cultivation of inner strength in order to face and overcome difficulties.
