Reproduction of a figure of the Goddess Hestia on a Corinthian column.
Hestia is the goddess of the home and family. She is the firstborn of the Titans Chronos and Rhea and sister of Zeus.
The Greek goddess Hestia (Vesta in Rome) was responsible for protecting the family, promoting marital happiness and maintaining harmony in homes, temples and cities. She is often depicted protecting a fire, the centre of the family hearth, symbol of warmth and light, the heart and reflection of the life-giving light of the Sun. She was worshipped on an altar in the home with a fire that had to be kept burning for ever. The Roman Vestals were priestesses who saw to it that Vesta’s fire did not go out and protected Rome.
