Reproduction of the head of King Hammurabi, 2000 BC. Original diorite from Babylonia, present-day Iraq. Currently on display in the Louvre Museum.
This head was found in excavations in the city of Susa and is believed to represent the face of Hammurabi, king of Babylon of the Amorites (an ancient kingdom located in the Mesopotamian region, which originated from the city-state of Babylon and spread across Akkad and Sumer). Hammurabi is known for his stele with the oldest surviving written legal code.
