Mithridates VI Eupator, king of Pontus. Of Persian and Greek descent, the kings of Pontus claimed descent from Cyrus the Great and the generals of Alexander the Great. Mithridates VI inherited the throne of the Kingdom of Pontus (south of the Black Sea) at the age of 20 and expanded his realm across the Middle East, incorporating much of Greece, then a Roman province.
He went to war against Rome, facing Lucius Cornelius Sulla, who, after expelling Mithridates from Greece, had to return to Rome to confront the rebellion of Gaius Marius. The final defeat of Mithridates was inflicted by Pompey the Great in 65 BC.
A fine example of classical art and heroic sculpture inspired by Antiquity.
