Sophocles (496 BC – 406 BC) was an Athenian playwright, one of the few ancient Greek playwrights whose works have survived and survived to the present day. His tragedies include Oedipus Rex and Antigone, which have profoundly influenced contemporary Western theatre and are still performed today in theatres around the world.
