High-relief of Apollo Epicureus, reproduction inspired by the frieze of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios.

The relief we reproduce is part of one of the friezes of the Temple of Apollo Epikourios of Bassae, in the Peloponnese region, near Figalia. These high reliefs are exposed in the British Museum, London. The temple has been dated to 450 B.C. to the early 4th century B.C. Pausanias recounts that this temple was dedicated by the inhabitants of Figalia to Apollo Epikourios, whose epithet “Epikourios” is attributed to Apollo’s aid during the plague that ravaged Figalia during the Peloponnesian War.

In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo is one of the most important and multifaceted Olympian gods. The son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of the virgin huntress Artemis, he is represented in iconography as the ideal of the kurós (beardless youth). Apollo was venerated in ancient Greece and Rome as the god of light and the sun, truth and prophecy, inspiring and conveying messages through the Pythia at the Oracle of Delphi. He is also the patron of medicine and healing, of the arts in general, and particularly of music and poetry, often accompanied by the nine Muses. His attributes include the bow and arrows, the lyre, the laurel crown, and his symbolic animals, the crow and the serpent, associated with medicine.

Decorating with reliefs inspired by Greco-Roman classical antiquity offers the opportunity to achieve a unique fusion of history and art. These high reliefs, with their sculptural technique combining depth and detail, become standout elements in our spaces, adding a touch of distinction to our homes and creating a timeless connection between past and present.
