Reproduction of a statue of the god Krishna playing the flute together with a cow. In Hinduism Krishna is one of the avataras or incarnations of Vishnu, one of the three main gods of the Trimurti or Hindu Trinity, together with Brahma the creator god of the Universe and Shiva, the one who destroys the forms to give birth to new ones. One of Krishna’s appellatives is Govinda, “lover of cows”.

Krishna appears in the Indian epic of the Mahabharata (“The Great War”) as charioteer and adviser to Prince Arjuna of the Pandava clan, whose kingdom had been usurped by his cousins the Kurus or Kuravas. Embedded in this epic is the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most important sacred texts of Hinduism.
