Greek relief of instrumentalists
Among the Greeks, the invention of music is generally attributed to Apollo, Cadmus, Orpheus and Amphion. Historians of music science praise Pythagoras who invented a monochord to mathematically determine the relationships between sounds. They also praise Laso, the Master of Pindarus, who in 540 B.C., was the first to write about the theory of music.
