Reproduction of a statue of the god Krishna playing the flute. In Hinduism Krishna is one of the avataras or incarnations of Vishnu, one of the three main gods of the Hindu Trimurti or Trinity, together with Brahma, the creator god of the Universe, and Shiva, the one who destroys forms to give birth to new ones.
Krishna appears in the Indian epic of the Mahabharata (“The Great War”) as charioteer and adviser to Prince Arjuna of the Pandava clan, whose kingdom had been usurped by his cousins the Kurus or Kuravas. Embedded in this epic is the Bhagavad Gita, one of the most important sacred texts of Hinduism.
