The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise, 1890, oil on canvas, Vincent Van Gogh (1853–1890). Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
Van Gogh, after leaving the asylum, settled in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he was welcomed by the well-known Doctor Gachet, a friend of his brother Théo. He spent his final months in this village, until, overwhelmed by loneliness, he shot himself on July 27, 1890, dying two days later. One of his last paintings was this depiction of the church at Auvers.
