The “Mouth of Truth” is a famous relief that can be found in Rome, on the left side wall of the portico of the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, built on an ancient temple of Hercules.
There are numerous traditions surrounding this original relief that speak of it representing the face of Neptune (Poseidon). The most famous legend tells us that if a liar put his hand in his mouth, he would lose it devoured by this Bocca della Verità.
