The RMS Titanic (Royal Mail Steamship Titanic) was a British ocean liner, the largest ship in the world at the time of its launching, which sank in the early hours of 14-15 April 1912 during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The sinking of the Titanic killed 1514 of the 2223 people on board, making it one of the largest peacetime shipwrecks in history. Titanic was the second of the three Olympic-class ocean liners owned by the White Star Line, and was built between 1909 and 1912 at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast.
