The Greek goddess Demeter, known as Ceres to the Romans, is the goddess of agriculture and fertility of the fields. One of her common attributes is the ears of wheat, which appear in many artistic representations as an offering. She is associated with the Mysteries of Eleusis, where she was worshipped, perhaps connected to the mysteries of life and death, regeneration, and rebirth.
