Medusa with iron foot, a recreation based on the sculpture located in the Prado Museum in Madrid, dating from 1770 – 1800, which is itself a copy of the Rondanini Medusa found in the Glyptothek in Munich.

In Greek mythology, the Gorgon Medusa is a terrifying mythological creature with snake hair and a petrifying gaze. Described as one of the three Gorgon sisters, the myth tells that she was originally a beautiful woman punished by Athena for a romantic encounter with Poseidon in the goddess’s temple. The curse transformed her hair into venomous snakes and condemned those who looked at her to turn into stone.

In the myth, the hero Perseus, with the help of the gods, defeated Medusa by using his shield as a mirror to locate her without having to look directly at her. Perseus cut off her head and used it as a weapon, ultimately delivering it to Athena, who placed it on her shield. In other representations, Athena wears the head of Medusa on her breastplate or aegis. Medusa became a symbol of danger, and her image has transcended mythology, influencing art, literature, and popular culture throughout the centuries.
