The Empire style developed as a successor to Neoclassicism from the time of Napoleon.  The discoveries in Egypt during the Napoleonic campaigns brought to Europe the phenomenon of Egyptomania, which was reflected in the decorative arts, furniture and jewellery, as well as in painting, architecture and sculpture.
