Description

Model of the tower of the Miguelete of Valencia, made in marble reconstituted with resin.

Measurements: 18 x 7 x 7 cm.

At the foot of the cathedral, on the west side, stands the bell tower, popularly known as the Miguelete, after the name of its main bell located on the terrace.

It is a free-standing tower, joined to the cathedral at the end of the 15th century. The construction of this tower is due to the initiative of Bishop Jaime de Aragón, who commissioned the project to Andreu Juliá in 1381. In 1413 the tower had already reached its third section.

Fortuitous fires twice destroyed the wooden structures used to support the hour bell, so the current stone belfry was built in the 18th century. It is octagonal in shape, made entirely of stone and is 51 metres high. At a height of fourteen metres, the first chamber, only 2 metres in diameter, served as a refuge for criminals who had been granted asylum.
