Description
Mosaic made in a completely handmade way, following the same techniques as thousands of years ago.
The technique used is “opus teselarium”, a mosaic of cubic stone tesserae.
In its manufacture, 8 mm tesserae of natural stones and marbles have been used. Fixed in mortar with a metal structure. Ready to be hung on the wall or as flooring on the floor.
This mosaic is a reproduction of a fragment of an Original Mosaic found in Ecija.
MOSAIC OF THE SEASONS OF THE YEAR.
From the second half of the 2nd century AD or the beginning of the 3rd century AD, from the excavations at Avenida Miguel de Cervantes, 35, Ecija, 2003-2004.
A very unusual polychrome mosaic whose theme is related to the seasons of the year: the central octagon depicts the apotheosis of the god Annus (‘Year’), the Roman personification of the annual cycle, seated on a throne between two winged Victorias, who appears surrounded by allegories of the four seasons, in the form of baskets of fruit from each season of the year and of amorcillos or erotes with the corresponding attributes and animals and birds typical of each season: a wild boar and ducks (winter); a bull, a dove and a swallow (spring); a lion, a partridge and a bee-eater (summer). Each seasonal group is separated by a figure blowing, possibly allegories of the winds.
Two borders surround the central composition: the first with vegetal scrolls, lilies, swans, masks and feline heads (these are symbols of the god Bacchus); the second with geometric motifs.
