Portico of Glory, Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. The Portico de la Gloria is the culminating work of the last late Romanesque campaign in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and stands as the pinnacle of Hispanic Romanesque sculpture and the first link in the Gothic style in sculpture. An inscription on the lintel of the central doorway gives the date 1188 and was made by the famous Maestro Mateo.

Architecturally, the portico rises above a crypt built for the purpose and is divided into three large doorways, the central one being the largest, corresponding to the naves of the church. It stands out for its style, impregnated with Burgundian and Isle of France influences, and for the extraordinary iconographic richness of its figures, under the appearance of a final judgement that is not threatening but glorious, making the popular name of Portico de la Gloria (Portico of Glory) a good one.

The tympanum of the central portal is dominated by the Majesty, accompanied by the evangelists, angels with the instruments of the Passion and the chosen ones. In the archivolt surrounding it are the figures of the twenty-four Elders of the Apocalypse, carrying various musical instruments and incense sticks. In the portal we see the figure of the Apostle James and below him, on the column, the tree of Jesus, that is, the human genealogy of Christ.
