Reproduction of a mask of Poseidon, known as Neptune among the Romans. Poseidon was the god of the sea in Greek mythology. Brother of Zeus, their representations are very similar, depicted as bearded men of mature age, sometimes distinguishable only by their attributes: Zeus with the lightning bolt and Poseidon with the trident.
In Greek mythology, Poseidon is the god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses, one of the twelve Olympian gods. Son of Cronus and Rhea, and brother of Zeus and Hades, Poseidon governs all bodies of water, not only the seas but also rivers and lakes. He is often depicted as a mature, bearded man carrying a trident, with which he can control the waters and cause earthquakes. He is credited with the creation of the horse, a symbol of strength and beauty. In myths and literature, such as Homer’s Odyssey, Poseidon appears as a highly feared god due to his volatile temper and ability to unleash furious sea storms. In art, he is often shown driving a chariot pulled by sea horses with fish tails and accompanied by his wife Amphitrite. He is attributed with numerous loves with goddesses, nymphs, and mortal women, and his descendants include notable figures like the Cyclops Polyphemus and Triton, half-human, half-fish. His worship was especially important among sailors.
