The quartz is a mineral composed of silica (SiO2). After the feldspar it is the mineral, which is most often found in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. It is characterized by its hardness and resistance to the deterioration by weather on its surface.
It is distinguished in two types of quartz: quartz-α and quartz-β. The amethyst, the citrine and the milky quartz are some of the many varieties of quartz, which are known in the gemology.
