This relief represents the portrait of Giovanna Tornabuoni, painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio (1448–1494), a Florentine painter of the Renaissance. It is one of the most captivating works housed in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. The inscription reads: “If only art could portray character and spirit! Nowhere on earth would there be a more beautiful painting,” followed by the date of the lady’s death in Roman numerals, 1488.
