Relief of the Annunciation. Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos.

This relief is placed in the pillar of the Southwest angle, Western gallery of the cloister of the Benedictine monastery of Santo Domingo de silos. The subject represented is that of the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin, a subject that appears here fused to the coronation of Mary by two angels. The scene is inscribed in an arch supported by small columns in which cloths are threaded and on a background of curtains. The relief combines an extreme abarrocamiento in attitudes and bends with the magnificent serenity and sweetness of the faces and the compositional daring of the angelic couple, is the work of the so-called ‘ second workshop ‘ silos, whose activity takes place in the last years Of the 12th century.
