Reproduction of a Romanesque Pantocrator statue. Original from the 11th-12th century.
Apocalyptic vision of Christ Almighty seated on a throne, with a book in his left hand in an attitude of blessing.
Pantocrator in Greek means Almighty. He is often depicted holding on one side the alpha and omega, symbols of Christ, almost always surrounded by the symbols of the Evangelists, and by the twenty-four crowned elders, with the cup and the viola in their hands, although these are generally dispensed with.
Depicted in Byzantine and Romanesque art, in wall paintings and reliefs the Almighty appears within an oval halo (mandorla), symbol of apocalyptic radiance and usually held by angels. Following the symbolism of church decoration, in Byzantine art the Pantocrator was placed in the dome, while in Romanesque art it decorated the apse.
