Relief reproduction of the Winged Sphinx from the palace of Darius the Great (549-486 BCE) in the city of Susa.
Susa was the capital of the Elamite Empire (1100 BC-645 BC). After its conquest by the Persians it became one of the four major cities of the empire.
The Mesopotamian sphinxes, called lammasu, are beings with human heads, wings and the body of a bull or lion. The lammasu in Mesopotamian mythology were celestial genies whose large statues were placed on the thresholds of palace gates for the protection of the enclosures.
