Medical practice in ancient Rome combined Greek medicine with its own practices, focusing on hygiene, prevention, and disease treatment. Roman physicians, called medici, worked in military hospitals (valetudinarium) and urban clinics. One of the most important physicians was Galen (129–201/216 AD), whose contributions to anatomy and physiology endured until the end of the Middle Ages.
In Rome, medical care included the use of medicinal herbs and precise surgical techniques. Roman surgical instruments were primarily made of bronze and iron. Among them were scalpels, forceps, bone saws, needles, strigils, curettes, and probes. These were used for procedures such as trepanation, amputations, and sutures. They also had catheters for treating urinary problems and speculums for gynecological examinations.
Roman medicine laid the essential foundations of Western medicine until the Renaissance.
