This sculpture depicts Clorinda, a character from the epic poem Jerusalem Delivered (Gerusalemme Liberata, 1580) by Torquato Tasso, which recounts a mythologized version of the First Crusade. The poem includes historical figures such as Godfrey of Bouillon and Tancred, Prince of Galilee, as well as fictional ones like Clorinda, a pagan warrior with whom Tancred falls in love. It also features fantastic and magical elements like wizards, angels, and demons who take part in the battle.
