Reproduction of a bust of Commodus, based on the sculpture by Italian artist Bartolomeo Cavaceppi (1719–1799).
Commodus (Aurelius Commodus Antoninus Augustus, 180–192 AD) was the son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius and the last representative of the Antonine dynasty. He inherited the throne at 18 after his father’s death. Classical historiography portrayed him with other discredited emperors like Nero, Caligula, Domitian, and Caracalla as a megalomaniac and depraved man, identifying himself as Hercules and participating in circus games as a gladiator. His madness and excesses led to a conspiracy against his life. Commodus was strangled by a freedman while bathing, in an attack organized by the Praetorian Prefect and his concubine. His death was followed by a turbulent period of civil wars until Septimius Severus became emperor.
