This reproduction of a Romantic-style sculpture represents the Roman dictator and general Julius Caesar, wearing a laurel wreath and holding scrolls of senatorial documents. Medallions of Roman emperors are featured on the base.

Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 B.C.) was a politician and military leader of the 1st century B.C., a member of the patrician Julia family, who attained the highest offices of the Roman state and dominated the politics of the Roman Republic. His conquests expanded Roman control over the territories that today include France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and part of Germany. He was the first Roman general to penetrate the unexplored territories of Britain and Germania. Under his rule, the Republic experienced great prosperity, but he was betrayed and assassinated in the Senate by Brutus and Cassius, men who had once been his trusted allies.

Aside from his political and military career, Caesar was also renowned as an orator and writer. He wrote at least one treatise on astronomy, another on Roman republican religion, and a study of Latin, none of which have survived to this day. The only works that remain are his Commentaries on the Gallic War and Commentaries on the Civil War. The development of his military career and much of his life are known through his own writings and those of authors such as Suetonius, Plutarch, Velleius Paterculus, and Eutropius.
