The Three Graces, in Greek Charites, were goddesses of beauty and charm. They were considered daughters of Zeus and formed part of the retinue of Aphrodite. In Greece they were Aglaea (“Beauty”), Thalia (“Abundance”), and Euphrosyne (“Joy”), while among the Romans they were known as Castitas (Chastity), Pulchritudo (Beauty), and Voluptas (Desire).

In art, this is a very frequently represented motif, from Classical Antiquity and later during the Renaissance, the Baroque, and Neoclassicism, by artists such as Botticelli, Rubens, and Canova. They usually appear in paintings and sculptures in a dancing pose with their hands intertwined, or embracing each other affectionately.
