Marble sculpture of Venus in a refined neoclassical style. Her contemporaries considered her to be on a par with the best Venuses of antiquity. When Napoleon took the Medici Venus to the Louvre, the sculptor Antonio Canova (1757 – 1822) was commissioned in Florence to make a copy of the Roman statue. The result was a new work, the Venus Italica, which came to be considered one of his masterpieces.
