Marble sculpture of Venus in a refined neoclassical style, a reproduction based on an original sculpture by Antonio Canova located in the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace in Florence. His contemporaries considered it on par with the best Venuses of antiquity. When Napoleon took the Venus de Medici to the Louvre, in Florence, the sculptor Antonio Canova (1757 – 1822) was commissioned to create a copy of the Roman statue. The result was a new work, the Venus Italica, which came to be considered one of his masterpieces.
