Water Nymph, reproduction based on The Nymph Salmacis (1826), a work by the Neoclassical sculptor François Joseph Bosio (1768–1845). The original work is exhibited at the Louvre Museum.

The nymph Salmacis was a naiad who lived in the spring of the same name located in Halicarnassus (modern-day Turkey). She fell in love with Hermaphroditus, the son of Hermes and Aphrodite. When he bathed in the lake, the nymph embraced him and prayed to the gods never to separate them. The gods granted her wish, merging their bodies into one. From then on, those who bathed in that lake would suffer the same fate, acquiring the attributes of both sexes.
