Reproduction of a head of Marcus Aurelius, based on a sculpture from the 17th century, a copy of an original Roman work. The original statue was found in the frigidarium of baths in Salagasso (modern-day Turkey), a city destroyed by an earthquake in the 7th century AD.
The Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius (121–180 AD), one of the so-called “Five Good Emperors,” and known as the philosopher-emperor, ruled the Roman Empire alongside co-emperor Lucius Verus from 161 to 180 AD. He is remembered today as one of the most notable representatives of Stoic philosophy; in his work Meditations, written as a diary, he set down his thoughts focused on the constant pursuit of virtue and wisdom, and their application to daily life, following the principles of Stoicism.
