Cycladic Head of the year 2500-2000 BC. The original piece is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Cycladic head from 2500-2000 BC. The Cycladic culture belongs to the group of pre-Hellenic civilisations (predecessors of Classical Greece), together with the Minoan and Mycenaean civilisations. It developed from 3300 BC to 2100 BC in the Greek archipelago of the Cyclades, named after the roughly circular shape in which these islands are scattered (kyklos = circle in Greek).

The best known aspect of the Cycladic world is its sculptures without marked detail except for the nose, with a schematic tendency towards rounded profiles and with great geometry in their features. These figures, predominantly female, were sculpted in marble and then ground and polished with emery stone. They were placed in tombs and were supposed to have a similar function to the Egyptian ushabtis as companions of the deceased in the afterlife.
