Originally, she was the Phrygian goddess, identified with Mother Earth and Nature. She appears in Greek mythology in the myth of Atalanta and Hippomenes, two lovers turned into lions by Cybele (according to other versions, by the god Zeus). Cybele, enraged by the lovers’ unholy union within a sacred enclosure dedicated to her, turns them into lions condemned to pull her chariot forever and unable to look at each other. She is usually shown holding the keys that give access to all the riches of the earth, and sitting on a throne accompanied by two lions (or sitting on a chariot pulled by two lions as in the fountain of Cybele, Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid), representing the superiority of Nature over all things.
